The industrial action embarked upon by civil servants in Cross River State was total as no worker was found in any public office in the State.

DAILY POST correspondent, who visited various offices in the state, observed that workers were harassed and intimated as well as barred from entering their offices by members of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).

Speaking with our correspondent on phone on Thursday, the Chairman of Trade Union Congress in the state, Comrade Clarkson Otu said the strike was total.

“We are very satisfied with the compliance; we have gone round to enforce compliance in virtually all government offices. We are in a meeting with the deputy commissioner of Police, to brief him on the strike” he stated.

Reacting to the strike, the state Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Hafiz told our correspondent on phone on Thursday that immediately the command got information about the strike; he mobilized the patrol team to move round the metropolis with a view to maintaining peace.

“Immediately we got wind of the industrial action, we mobilized our men and briefed them on strategy to curtail breach of peace and destruction of government’s property.

“I have informed all the Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) about various steps to ensure that peace are ensured and nobody was disturbed from going about their normal duties.

“As far as we are concerned, Calabar is peaceful; we have to ensure that government properties are not carted away by hoodlums in the name of strike.”

He said over 500 Police officers have been deployed to various strategic and flash locations, including government establishment while several others are on patrol.

“All these measures are to ensure that nobody is harassed or molested and people are allowed to go about their normal duties,” the police commissioner stated.
