Two factions of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ondo State Chapter, today conducted separate ward congresses to elect delegates that will participate in the party’s primaries.
The two groups laying claim to the party structure are the dissolved State executives Committee led by Hon. Ebenezer Alabi and the newly constituted Caretaker Committee headed by Hon. Dare Adeleke.
DailyPost recalls that there has been lingering crisis between the defected Labour Party (LP) to PDP and the old PDP members over who should be in charge of the party structure.
Despite this, the congresses was held peacefully at the two camps in all the 203 wards as there was no clash or verbal attack from members.
Our correspondent, who monitored the congress in Owo, Ikare and Akure discovered that many members of the party from the two factions trooped out enmasse to participate in the Congress.
INEC officials and the PDP National Delegates for the ward congresses led by Senator Lekan Mustapha were also on ground to monitor the event.
Meanwhile, the old State Secretariat, along Oyemekun road, Akure, the State Capital, when visited by our correspondent has again been sealed off and taken over by Policemen.
The building, which had been serving as the State PDP secretariat for the past 16 years was once sealed by the Police last week, immediately the party National Working Committee (NWC) dissolved the State executive and constituted a caretaker committee.
But, this was later reopened three days later as officers under the leadership of Alabi returned to office.
Speaking with reporters, the embattled PDP State Chairman, insisted that the congresses conducted by the new PDP were illegal because they were in control of the party.
But, the caretaker committee chairman, Hon. Dare Adeleke said everybody has the right to say anything, saying he is very sure that it is the Committee they set up that would be recognised.
He faulted the Alabi’s faction for going ahead to conduct the congresses despite the dissolution of the NWC.
