Commander of Operation Safe Haven, saddled with the maintenance of peace in Plateau and Bauchi States, Major General Rogers Nicholas, on Thursday said troops attached to the OPSH have arrested over 300 persons for drug related offences and 65 others criminals in Plateau State, since his assumption in office about 6 weeks ago.
Nicholas made the disclosure while speaking at a consultative dialogue conference on Youth, Security and Governance in Plateau State, organised by Center for Youth Participation Dialogue and Advocacy Africa, held in Jos.
He explained that the bulk of the criminals are the operators of tricycles, popularly known as (keke NAPEP), hence the restriction of their movement at night which has drastically reduced the crime rate in the state.
According to him, the OPSH in its efforts to ensure peaceful co-existence among the citizenry, has held several stakeholders meeting with communities in crisis-prone areas.
“The issue of clashes between Fulani herdsmen and farmers in Plateau is now in the past because areas which were seen as ‘no go areas’ no longer exist.
The Commander further stated that security of the State should not be left in the hands of security agents alone, urging everyone to be involved.
Nicholas appealed to citizens of Plateau to continue to tolerate each other to consolidate on the peace being enjoyed in the State.
Earlier, the Director of Center for Youth Participation Dialogue and Advocacy Africa (CYPDA), Chris Iyama said the purpose of the meeting was to draw government’s attention to issues affecting Youths and to promote peace among youths in the state.
