Mikel puts new Chelsea contract talk on hold

Chelsea defensive midfielder and Nigerian international, John Obi Mikel is not in a haste to discuss a new contract with Chelsea but wants to wait until the end of the season, Metro.co.uk disclosed.

Mikel was best on the bench during former manager, Jose Mourinho’s second spell at the club, who preferred Serbian Nemanja Matic and former Arsenal Captain Cesc Fabregas in his midfield.

But after a terrible start to the 2015/16 season, Mourinho was sacked and Guus Hiddink took over and the change has seen Mikel flourished under the Dutchman displaying Matic from the starting line-up which has seen the Blues remained unbeaten in the premier league this year.

With this, the talk of Mikel leaving Stamford Bridge in the last two transfer windows has turned into a desperate attempt from the club to keep the new fans favourites but his agent, Babawo Mohammed, said any talk of contract renewal must wait until the end of the current campaign.

He said “Chelsea have approached him for an extension,” but he said after the season he’ll decide.

“He has many teams interested – almost three clubs in China want him.”

Mikel was recruited by Chelsea in 2006 and his current contract at Stamford Bridge expires in 2017.
