Mikel Obi: How ex-Super Eagles players reacted to Chelsea legend’s retirement

Former Super Eagles defender, Sam Sodje has reacted to the retirement of Chelsea legend, John Obi Mikel, from international football.

Sodje pointed out that no player is irreplaceable at Super Eagles, adding that Nigeria’s legend, Austin Jay-Jay Okocha was untouchable, but when he left, the national team moved on.

He, however, hailed Mikel for his contributions to the National team during his time.

Sodje told Brila: ”I don’t think any player is in replaceable, well we will miss him [Mikel] but at the same time, there is always an end to every football players’ career in the National team.

“There was a time Okocha was unplayable or untouchable, but when he left, the national team moved on, so I don’t think there is an irreplaceable player, we all played and retired at one time so, it’s all good.”

Also, former Super Eagles midfielder, Mutiu Adepoju described Mikel as one of the country’s most outstanding players.

“I want to congratulate and commend him [Mikel] for what he has done for the country,” Adepoju told Goal.

“Sometimes when you feel you have done your best and feel it is the right time for you to leave, then you have to leave. Nobody stays in a place forever.

“Overall he has done very well. He has represented the country very well. I wish him all the best.”

DAILY POST recalls that Mikel on Thursday afternoon announced his retirement from the Super Eagles, via his Instagram page.

The 32-year-old said, “Egypt is a country where I’ve started and have finished my National career. In 2006 I played my first official championship for my Country. 2019 African Cup of Nations marks my last championship for National Team with Super Eagles.

“My national career started in 2003 under 17 World Cup and I’m grateful for the national team for placing me on the world arena and giving me an opportunity to show my skill and have an incredible National and International career.

“At the age of 32 it’s time for me to retire from the National team and let the youth take over, who’ve done an amazing job securing a bronze medal at AFCON 2019.

“Thank you to all my Nigerian supporters and to my Country for all the trust, support and love you’ve shown me over the past 15 years.”
