Messi under fire for stopping France World Cup winner from joining Barcelona

Brazilian legend, Rivaldo has blamed captain, Lionel Messi after Barcelona was unable to sign Atletico Madrid ace, Antoine Griezmann, last summer transfer window.

Barcelona then had to settle for the Brazilian winger, Malcom, who was signed from French Ligue 1 side, Bordeaux.

Rivaldo, however, said being “in Messi’s shadow” could well have been the key factor that stopped the 2018 France World Cup winner from making the move to Camp Nou.

The 46-year-old, who played for Barcelona from 1997 to 2002, reckons Messi could have had something to do with Griezmann not joining the La Liga champions.

“I am not disappointed that Griezmann did not sign for Barcelona as every player has his own way of seeing things,” Rivaldo told Marca on Thursday.

“There are many great players at Barcelona and it’s hard being in Messi’s shadow.

“Griezmann is a world champion that I like very much as a player.”

Messi and Griezmann will face each other when Barcelona will tackle Atletico Madrid in the La Liga fixture on Saturday.
