Messi scores 300th La Liga goal

Lionel Messi scored his 300th La Liga goal for Barcelona, as they beat Sporting Gijon 3-1 on Wednesday night.

The 28-year-old netted his first ever league goal almost 11 years ago and has gone on to accumulate 299 more strikes in 335 appearances.

Messi opened the scoring in the 25th minute of the match, before Gijon equalized. The Argentine then grabbed his second of the game and his 301st in the 31st minute, to restore Barca’s lead.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner, turned down the chance to reach the milestone last week, as he passed his penalty to Luis Suarez to score, in their 6-1 win over Celta Vigo.

Barcelona currently hold a three-point gap at the top of La Liga, with a game in hand.
