Messi, Iniesta react to death of former Barcelona striker, Enrique Castro

Lionel Messi has paid tribute to Barcelona legend, Enrique Castro

Castro fondly called ‘Quini’ died of a heart attack.

The striker, also known as ‘El Brujo’ (The Wizard), made his name at Sporting Gijon, racking up 275 goals in 443 games over two spells.

Messi, in honour of the deceased, posted a rare picture of him with Castro on Instagram with the caption: “Farewell Quini.”

In his reaction, Andres Iniesta wrote: “We’ll miss you, Wizard. RIP. My condolences to the family and friends.”

In similar vein, Blaugrana’s president Josep Bartomeu wrote: “Dismayed by the death of Quini, an extraordinary player and an incredible person who won a privileged place in the hearts of the Barça players and the world of football.

“Our heartfelt condolences to your family and friends.”

Former Barcelona manager, Luis Enrique also paid tribute: “Wizard, how happy you made me during the beginning [of my time at Barcelona]. I’ll never forget you. Affectionate, modest and close. May you rest in peace.”

Quini had 35 caps for Spain and eight goals, and was part of the World Cup squads for 1978 and 1982.

Quini ended his time at Barça with 54 goals in 100 La Liga games.
