Barcelona forward Lionel Messi, struck in the 88th minute in their La Liga game against Deportivo La Coruna, to set a new world record for consecutive league goals in the top flight.

The goal, which sealed a 2-0 win for the Catalans after two disastrous weeks, meant that the Argentine has found the back of the net in 17 straight games, beating the former record set of 16, set by teodor Peterek.
