Elder statesman and one-time Secretary General of the Commonwealth of Nations, Chief Emeka Anyaoku has requested the National Assembly to enact a law that will merge the 36 states into 6 different regions.
This was as he argued that rather than maintain the present multiple number of states, six regions would be most appropriate for Nigeria’s rapid development.
A VOA Hausa Radio report quotes Anyaoku as disclosing this in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, where he attributed the trend where state governors cannot settle the salaries of workers to the high number of federating states.
He recalled that at the time when Nigeria had only four regional governments, a steady development was recorded although the nation’s earnings were lean at the time.
