Mayweather defends choice of Berto for his final bout

Floyd Mayweather has sought to explain why he decided on Andre Berto, for next month’s Las Vegas title bout – which is expected to be his last.

The American boxer has been roundly criticized, since he confirmed that he will face Berto on September 12, instead of a more dangerous opponent like Britain’s Amir Khan.

“I have been getting backlash,” Mayweather said.

“They say no one in the sport will buy the fight. I picked him because he is an exciting fighter.”

Mayweather is expected to defeat Berto and equal Rocky Marciano’s record of 49-0, taking him straight into the history books.

When the welterweight king was asked why he did not pick Khan, he replied: “How many championships has Khan won, two. Berto has won two also.”
