May Day: Yobe workers make demand to Gov. Gaidam

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Yobe State Council, has expressed dismay over the disproportion between teacher-pupils ratio in primary schools across the state, describing it as a bottleneck for achieving quality education.

NLC State Chairman, Comrade Muktar Musa Tarbutu, made the position of the congress known at an event marking the 2019 May Day celebration held at the August 27th Stadium, Damaturu today.

Tarbutu said, “we are equally aware of government’s effort towards boosting the dilapidating structures in our schools.

“However, the challenge of increased enrolment leading to higher teacher to pupils ratio in the state, it’s a great challenge to quality education delivery.”

He commended the state government for doing so much in the areas of health services, road network, water supply, education and social infrastructure.

Tarbutu appealed to the government to consider the construction of more houses for civil servants, training of middle-cadre staff for efficiency as well as the implementation of of 30% to pensioners who retired before 2011.

On the N30,000 minimum wage, the NLC expressed optimism that Yobe workers would be the first to enjoy the new wage without any condition.

On his part, Governor Ibrahim Gaidam, represented by Permanent Secretary, Establishment, Mohammed Fawa appreciated the leadership of NLC in the state for industrial harmony.

The Chief Executive said the government, workers and people of the state are proud of successes recorded under the current administration

“May I, therefore, appeal to the workers to extend this good working relationship with the incoming administration.

“Taken into cognisance the pivotal role which the Yobe state workforce has been in the pursuance of our developmental goals and our administration has also maintained its focus and given workers their dues and improving their general welfare”, he pointed.

Governor Gaidam assured the NLC of carefully examining their demands with a view to granting them.

This year’s celebration in the state was done in a low-key atmosphere.
