The Oyo State chapter of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and its counterpart, the United Labour Congress of Nigeria (ULC) on Tuesday held parallel May Day celebrations in Ibadan, the state capital.
While the NLC held its own celebration at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba, Ibadan, the ULC marked the day at the Independent Petroleum Marketers building (IPMAN house), Apata, also in Ibadan.
The NLC State chairman, Comrade Waheed Olojede, who read the speech of the National President of the Union, Comrade Ayuba Wabba urged the federal government to address the disparity between the remuneration of political office holders and other workers in the public sector.
He also said it would be helpful if the federal government could be transparent about its fight against corruption.
TUC Chairman in the state, Comrade Olusola Ogundiran in his address urged the state government to address the issues bothering on security, power, unemployment and empowerment.
DAILY POST correspondent, who was at the stadium gathered that it took the intervention of medical experts and other chieftains of the labour unions present at the stadium to revive Ogundiran who lost consciousness shortly after the march pass by unions present at the stadium.
Ogundiran was said to have quickly rushed out of the stadium for further medical attention.
However, State Secretary of UCL, Comrade Adejoke Oyeleke who spoke on behalf of the State Acting Chairman, Comrade Leye Olayemi in Apata, reiterated the call of UCL on its demand for N108,00 minimum wage in view of the trending global economic realities.
Oyeleke while reading the seven-point agenda of the union, called on the Federal Government to review privatisation of the electricity sector.
ULC also advised the government to ensure that the fight against corruption should be redefined, deepened, transparent and to be accountable for recovered funds so far.
