Barcelona defender Jeremy Mathieu, has lifted the lid on a face off that happened between Lionel Messi and coach Luis Enrique on the club’s training ground.
There has been serious speculation about the relationship between Messi and the coach, but people at the club have roundly denied the tensions in the press.
However, Mathieu, who moved to the Camp Nou last summer, admitted there was indeed an exchange of words at the beginning of this year.
“It was when we got back from holiday,” Mathieu told RMC of the incident that occurred at the La Liga club’s training centre on Jan. 2.
“Suddenly, for a foul that wasn’t given, ‘Leo’ blew his top. Things got tense, they said a few things to each other.
“The coach came to speak to him in the dressing room afterwards and that’s that. It happens at every club, but because it’s Barcelona, it’s made out to be a huge thing. That’s the problem.”
Messi was left on the bench two days after in their 1-0 loss to Real Sociedad and was absent from opening training the next day.
