Martial was not Man United’s penalty taker against Everton – Mourinho

Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho, has revealed that forward, Anthony Martial was not supposed to be the Red Devils penalty taker after United’s 4-0 win over Everton at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Mourinho said playmaker, Juan Mata, is supposed to be the one to take the penalty against the Toffees but he had been substituted on 77minutes.

The United boss added that though, he was happy to let his team work it out on whom to convert the penalty and seeing Martial stepped out to put an icing on the cake by scoring the penalty is nice.

“The penalty taker today was Juan Mata,” Mourinho said.

He said, “But he was out so I let the players take the decision.

He added, “It is nice for Anthony Martial, fine for me, no problem.”

Romelu Lukaku was also vying to take the penalty, having scored moments before against his old club.

Martial had forced a handball from former Red Devils midfielder, Morgan Schneiderlin and not yet got on the score sheet, he opted to step up for United.

Manchester United has seen Paul Pogba take the reins in recent times, however, his hamstring injury could see the responsibilityshifted going forward.
