Members of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Enugu State chapter, Thursday, took a protest to the Enugu office of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, demanding postponement of the governorship and House of Assembly elections in the State.
The party members were led by the State Chairman, Dr. Ben Nwoye.
DAILY POST reports that this came as an Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal earlier in the day reinstated Senator Ayogu Eze as the party’s governorship candidate.
An Abuja Federal High Court had sacked Ayogu and ordered the INEC to recognize Barr. George Ogara. However, in a judgement today, the Appellate Court said Senator Eze remained the party’s candidate.
Following the development, the party members demanded a postponement of the exercise to enable them carry out campaign across the State.
“We have written the INEC; we are demanding that they should postpone the exercise. They should push it forward to enable us carry out our campaign,” Nwoye said.
Earlier Senator Eze had boasted that with the Court verdict, the coast was clear for him.
He said nobody would be able to stop his political movement, which he described as a tornado.
“I want to assure you that our spirit is not down. This tornado is on the move,” he stated.
However, reacting, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, described APC claims as spurious and laughable.
Director of communications of the PDP campaign organization, Barr. Nana Ogbodo told DAILY POST that the APC never campaigned before now.
He said, “given the spate of woeful performances by some key members of the APC in the state during the last Presidential/National Assembly elections, whereof they all lost at their various polling booths, it’s perhaps not unexpected that they would seek to rationalize the vacuity of their hitherto boastful posturings. It’s also possible that they are just intent on engaging in some farcical theatrics in order to corner off some campaign funds from Abuja.
“Yet it’s not lost on us that the last refuge of a scoundrel is often to assume that his enemies are the enemies of God! For a party which governorship candidate could not even as much as win his ward during the last Presidential/national assembly elections, it’s indeed disingenuous to seek a postponement of the election at this hour.
“Recall that before now, instead of engaging in campaigns, the APC leadership in the state had openly boasted that it would use ‘federal might’ to win the gubernatorial elections. It is therefore curious that the same party has now turned round to seek a scapegoat by spuriously accusing INEC, CBN and security agencies of engaging in the same game they are obsessed of.
“We hereby urge the good people of our dear state to ignore this infantile antics of some disembelling demagogues and troop out enmasse to perform once again their civic duty come Saturday.”
