Manchester United are ready to use Wayne Rooney, as a makeweight in a sensational move for Romelu Lukaku.
United boss Jose Mourinho wants Lukaku and is ready to allow his captain return to Everton, in a bid to beat Chelsea to the Belgium striker.
Everton chairman Bill Kenwright held talks with Rooney’s agent Paul Stretford yesterday in London, over a move back to Goodison Park.
Kenwright is keen to see Rooney back in an Everton shirt, 13 years after he was sold to United in a controversial £27m transfer.
United are likely to have to pay around £180,000 of Rooney’s weekly wage next season, for the Everton deal to go ahead. Manager Jose Mourinho returns for pre-season tomorrow and is said to be surprised Rooney’s future remains unresolved.
Everton value Lukaku at a world record £100 million and Chelsea have been frontrunners to land the player. But the Blues have not made a concrete bid, because of their failure to offloand Diego Costa.
