Manchester United are set to complete a move for Porto right back, Diogo Dalot.
Jose Mourinho’s side are still discussing the structure of the offer for Dalot, who has a buy-out clause of £17.4million.
Pundits say the young defender is being viewed as an ideal understudy to Antonio Valencia, who is 33-yrs-old and needs constant treatment on a knee injury.
Newtelegraph (UK) reports Mourinho, who himself was a UEFA Champions League winning coach with FC Porto, as saying “the acquisition of the young Portuguese defender will ostensibly see Manchester United’s defensive issues at right back remedied.”
Dalot is a Portugal Under-21 international who can also play left back.
He broke into Porto’s first team in February in that position and played in his club’s 0-0 Champions League draw at Liverpool.
Dalot helped Portugal win the 2016 UEFA European Under-17 Championship, scoring twice in five games in Azerbaijan including once in the final against Spain.
United have discussed a number of options including Atletico Madrid’s Sime Vrsaljko and Joao Cancelo at Valencia, but have now opted for the cheaper target of Dalot believing he has the potential to kick on.
United expect to offset the deal with Matteo Darmian’s £11.5m sale to Juventus.
