Man United v Newcastle: Mourinho introduces new formation, gives Matic new role

Manchester United boss, Jose Mourinho is contemplating playing a 3-4-3 formation for the club’s must-win clash with Newcastle United on Saturday, according Metro.

Manchester United have been without a win in their last four matches and Mourinho’s future at the club is looking increasingly precarious.

United laboured to a 0-0 draw with Valencia in the Champions League on Tuesday playing a 4-3-3 formation with Alexis Sanchez and Marcus Rashford supporting Romelu Lukaku

While the Portuguese was pleased with the commitment levels of his attackers, he felt his midfield trio of Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic and Marouane Fellaini were too slow in possession and lacked the creativity to break down Valencia.

Metro reports that Mourinho had his team working on a back three in training on Thursday with a view to playing a more attack minded 3-4-3 against Newcastle.

Matic could be asked to play alongside Chris Smalling and Eric Bailly against the Magpies.

Mourinho was unhappy with the pair’s distribution against Valencia and feels Matic’s greater passing range could unlock Pogba in midfield.

Matic’s deeper role could hand a reprieve for Fred to play alongside Pogba but Mourinho is also minded that Juan Mata could afford to play there given United are expected to dominate possession.

With Lukaku, Sanchez and Rashford in attack supported by Pogba and one of Mata or Fred.
