An Igbosere High Court, Lagos, on Tuesday sentenced a 31-year-old man, Ibrahim Tijani to death for killing his neighbour with a cutlass.
Tijani, who resided at an uncompleted building at Ajah area of Lagos, was first arraigned on Jan. 21, 2016.
The Prosecutor, Adeniji Kazeem (SAN), the Attorney General of Lagos State, had told the court that Tijani, unlawfully killed one Bashorun Okanlawon, 57, with a cutlass on Feb. 8, 2015, in his residence.
He said that the offence contravened Section 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
During trial, the 16-year-old teenage son of the deceased, Adeola Okanlawon, told the court that his father was killed with a cutlass after complaining of smoke coming from a neighbour’s generator.
He said that their neighbour, Tijani, killed his father with a cutlass during an argument over generator smoke.
He said that his late father had called the defendant to complain about the smoke that was coming out of his generator set into our room.
According to Adeola, his father asked the convict to change the position of the generator set to stop the smoke from entering our room, but he refused to do so.
In his defence, Tijani had denied killing the deceased, but stated that he fought with the deceased.
He pleaded not guilty and was remanded in prison.
Ruling, Justice Adedayo Akintoye sentenced Tijani to death by hanging after finding him guilty of one-count charge of murder.
