An Ejigbo Magistrate court has sentenced a 41-year-old Abubakar Umar to 24-month imprisonment over alleged conspiracy and stealing.
Upon his arrest, Umar was arraigned before the court for a two-count charge, and having been found guilty of the charges, he was sentenced by Magistrate T. O. Shomade.
It was said that one Mr. Suraju Alakija had written a petition against Umar on May 24, 2019 to the area commander of Idimu police command, alleging that Umar fraudulently obtained and received the sum of N1million from him paid to his GTB account, as he promised to sell a truck with registration number YDB 718 XA to Alakija through his business partner, one Mr. Chika Mbah.
The police prosecutor, ASP Kenneth Asibor, who confirmed the details told the court that in a bid to deceive the complainant to pay the money for the truck, Umar who said the truck belonged to his boss, had arranged someone to disguise as his boss and speak to Alakija on phone.
Asibor explained that having collected the money, Umar had run away when Alakija later got information that the truck actually belonged to a logistics company.
He said Alakija reported the case to the police and Umar was tracked and arrested in Minna, Niger State and was brought back to Lagos where the offence was committed.
Umar was subsequently arraigned before the Ejigbo magistrate court where he was sentenced to two years imprisonment after he was found guilty of the alleged offence.
