A 29-year-old man, Morufu Sofoluwe, who allegedly raped his neighbour’s 9-year-old daughter and infected her with HIV was on Wednesday remanded in prison custody by an Ondo Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
According to the prosecutor, Insp. Sunday Eigbejiale, the accused committed the offence in July at Isale-Abetu in Abeokuta area of the State.
The prosecutor told the court that Sofoluwe lured the victim into his room where he allegedly raped her.
“The nine-year-old girl, who had been sick for a while, was taken to the hospital on August 28, where some tests were carried out and the results indicated that she has HIV.
“After questioning, the victim later told her parents that the accused was the one that raped her. The accused had also been diagnosed of HIV,” Eigbejiale disclosed.
Eigbejiale said the offence contravened Section 218 of the Criminal Laws of Ogun State, 2006.
The accused plea was not taken by the court.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr Anthony Araba, consequently ordered that Sofoluwe be remanded in Oba Prison pending the advice by the Director of Public Prosecution while adjourning the case till October 30.
