The Ogun State Police Command on Wednesday paraded a 40-year-old man, Emeka Obi, for allegedly abducting 97 year old Iposiola Samaiye.
While parading the suspect, the state Police Commissioner, Valentine Ntomchukwu, said the suspect, alongside his gang, abducted Pa Samaiye from his residence at Ijebu-Esure last Thursday, and later demanded a N20m ransom from the family.
Ntomchukwu noted that police officers trailed the kidnappers to a forest in the state where they held Pa Samaiye captive, adding that his accomplice, identified as Prince, however escaped.
He said: “They held the 97-year-old man inside the bush without food for four days. But our men, through tracking, between 3am and 5am this morning (Tuesday), were able to arrest them and set the old man free.”
The police boss also stated that the victim has been taken to a private hospital in Ijebu-Ode where he is receiving medical attention.
While speaking with journalists at the hospital, son of the victim, Obafemi, disclosed that the abductors demanded a N20 million ransom, which was negotiated downward to 10 million and later N1 million.
He said: “The kidnappers first demanded for N20 million, later it was negotiated to N10 million and later N1 million. But we did not pay any ransom before my father was freed by the police.”
The police boss further warned kidnappers, cultists and other criminal-minded individuals to stay away from the state, adding that failure to heed his warning will result into prosecution when caught.
