One Murtala Kolawole, 32, was on Monday arraigned in a Wuse Zone 2 Senior Magistrates’ Court, Abuja, for allegedly defrauding a man, one Seyi Obafemi of N500, 000 on the pretext of securing him a job.
The prosecutor, Cpl. Mohammed Ahmed, told the court that one Mr. Seyi Obafemi, of Gbazango Extension, wrote a petition to the FCT Commissioner of Police, on the matter on December 15, 2015. Ahmed said the defendant approached the complainant with the pretence that he is connected to the management of a company, Unodis System Belgrad, Lagos.
He said that the accused, of same resident as the victim in Gbazango Extension, Kubwa, Abuja, claimed that he would assist the complainant secure a job in the said company and requested for N500, 000.
The prosecutor said that the money was for employment fee, which the complainant gave to the accused in trust.
He said that the accused could not process the employment as promised and denied the allegation during police investigations, but later admitted to have collected N320, 000 from the complainant.
The prosecutor said the accused is standing trial on a two-count charge of criminal breach of trust and cheating, stating that the offences contravened Sections 312 and 322 of the Penal Code.
The accused person, however, pleaded not guilty.
The Magistrate, Shuaibu Usman, granted the accused bail in the sum of N1 million with a reliable surety that must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.
Usman further adjourned the case till February 2 for mention.
