Man gets 2 months imprisonment for assault

A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Tuesday sentenced a 26-year-old man, Achoda Solomon, to two months imprisonment for causing grievous hurt.

The judge, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, however, gave the convict an option to pay a fine of N5, 000.

He ordered Solomon to return a DVD player or the value, to one Margaret Ochili, whom he took the player from after beating her and causing her grievous hurt.

Sadiq advised the convict to desist from committing crimes, adding that the sentence would serve as deterrent to potential offenders.

Solomon, who resides at Karmo Village, was convicted on a count charge.

The convict had pleaded guilty to the charge and urged the court to temper justice with mercy, claiming that he acted out of ignorance.

The prosecutor, Florence Auhioboh, had told the court that Ochili, of same address with the convict, reported the matter at Karmo Police Station on Aug. 22.

Auhioboh said that the convict impregnated​ the complainant in 2011, and that they had been living together and had two kids.

She said that about two months ago, the convict left their home to an unknown destination and did not keep money for upkeep of the family.

Auhioboh said that he left the home with the complainant’s DVD player.

She said that when the complainant traced Solomon to retrieve the DVD Player, he beat her and caused grievous hurt on her left eye side.

The prosecutor said that during police investigation, the convict confessed to committing the crime and begged for mercy.

The prosecutor had told the court that the offence as punishable under Section 247 of the Penal Code.
