Man arraigned for allegedly beating pastor, destroying church property in Lagos

A 49-year-old man identified as Abiodun Adey­inka has been arraigned at an Ebute-Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos for allegedly beating up a pastor and damaging his property worth N5 million.

Adeyinka is facing a six-count bordering on mali­cious damage, conspiracy, unlawful assault on the Celestial Church of Christ, CCC, pastor and manner likely to cause breach of peace.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Police Prosecutor, Insp. Cousin Adams, told the court that the accused committed the offences on January 3, 2016, at noon, at No. 64, Adekunle Banjo Street, Magodo, Lagos.

He added that Adeyinka forcibly entered into a Celestial Church of Christ building during worship, causing panic among the worshippers before damaging the church property.

He named the damaged property as Jazz musical instrument, Konga drum, piano, five wireless micro­phones, six pieces of altar clothes, assorted church perfumes, wedding gowns and sacred pictures of Mary and Jesus.

According to the prosecutor, the accused also assaulted the presiding head of the church and tore his church garment.

He revealed that the offences contravened Sections 50, 126, 166, 170, 309 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
