A 30-year-old man has committed suicide by drinking dangerous chemical suspected to be herbicide.
The incident occurred at Nkanyia village in Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State.
An eyewitness who gave his name as Odu Bisong said that the victim, Bob Ebu, a native of Nkanyia village in Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State was found dead after he allegedly committed suicide by drinking herbicide.
He could not ascertain the reason behind the act but attributed it to depression and frustration.
Bisong said it was a sad incident which is a taboo in the land of Boki.
According to Bisong, “The tradition of Iruan in Boki forbids suicide. If you commit suicide in the bush, you will be buried in the bush and that place will be marked ‘evil and must be avoided,” he stated.
“If it were in the house, your family will be forced to vacate the premises and be made to undergo some traditional cleansing with apologies to the gods and the community.”
When DAILY POST contacted the Police Public Relations Officer, Ms Irene Ugbo, she denied knowledge of the incident.
