Man accused of causing death of lover granted N300,000 bail in Lagos

A Chief Magistrates court in Surulere, Lagos has granted bail to a man accused of having caused the death of his lover who drank sniper insecticide.

The 33-year-old, identified as Emeka Ajezu who resides at Monkey Village in the Maza-Maza area of the state, has been set free after pleading not guilty to a charge of, “causing death by negligence.”

Chief Magistrate, Ipaye Nwachukwu, granted N300, 000 bail to the accused and also ordered him to produce two sureties in like sum.

According to the Prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, Ajezu was dating 17-year-old Chisom Ekwere, and got her pregnant.

He said, “But when she became pregnant for him, Ajezu refused to take responsibility for the pregnancy because he was planning to get married to another woman.

“Late Ekwere’s elder sister took her to the house of the accused and she started living with him while still pregnant.

Ajezu had allegedly told the deceased that he was going to the village for his wedding ceremony with another woman.

The prosecutor further explained that the suicide note Ekwere left behind indicated that she drank sniper insecticide because she was heartbroken by Ajezu’s behaviour.

Osayande said that the offence contravened Sections 227 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2011.

The Court adjourned the matter until Dec. 20 for further hearing.
