Malaysian Police arrest five Nigerian students over N125.2m Internet fraud


The Malaysian police have apprehended five Nigerian students for allegedly carrying out internet fraud amounting to N125.2 million in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.

DAILY POST gathered that the five students, between the age of 20 and 30, are student of Information Technology a private college in Kuala Lumpur. They were rounded up on June 30, 2015, in different locations of Petaling Jaya, Cyberjaya, Damansara and Kuala Lumpur.

According to Penang Commercial Crimes Chief, ACP Azmi Adam said two local women, between the ages of 40 and 55, who are the owners of the accounts used by the fraudsters were also arrested.

Azmi noted that items recovered from the syndicate include, five laptops, 20 smart phones, ATM cards, SIM cards and documents allegedly used in deceiving their victims.

He disclosed that the police launched “Operation Merpati” following a report from the owner of an ice block producing factory in George Town saying the syndicate has defrauded him.

The 62-year-old ice block factory owner stated that sometime in March he recived an e-mail from the syndicate that he was among the 50 persons selected to receive RM15.9 million from the government of the United States.

He said, “The e-mail requested the victim to follow certain procedures to ensure he did not miss the opportunity.

‘’Convinced by the contents of the e-mail, the victim carried out 51 transactions involving money, to accounts numbers given by the syndicate before realising it was a scam. He later lodged a police report.”

The police Chief further affirmed that initial investigations by the police shows that the syndicate had previously defrauded several people to the tune of RM2.4 million.
