MaiduguriIndications have emerged that at least, three soldiers, six vigilantes and dozens of Boko Haram fighters, including three female bombers, were killed during clashes in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital on Wednesday evening, Vanguard reports .
Boko Haram insurgents had launched an attack on the city through the Giwa Barracks axis but were repelled by the Nigerian military.
“Three soldiers were killed during a fight with the terrorists while six of our members were killed by three female suicide bombers,” civilian vigilante official, Yusuf Sani, who spoke with vanguard, said on Thursday.
“The terrorists suffered serious casualties,” he said, though he did not specify the figure. Sanni also confirmed that 12 vigilantes were injured by the shrapnel of the detonated bombs.
Speaking under the condition of anonymity, an army official confirmed Sani’s account. “We rounded them and killed many of them… I cannot tell you the number of the insurgents we killed them,” he added.
As direct fallout of the attack, the army imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew on Thursday. Schools, markets and public buildings, including hospitals were all closed, just as streets were completely deserted, leaving only the military and policemen patrolling.
