On Tuesday night, the Super Eagles took control of Group E in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying series, with a battling 3-2 victory over Libya in Sfax, Tunisia.
Odion Ighalo and Ahmed Musa gave Nigeria a 2-0 lead, before Mohamed Zubya and Ahmed Benali equalized for the Mediterranean Knights.
Ighalo however struck again in the dying minutes, to ensure the Eagles got all three points.
What did we learn from the game?
1. Ighalo destroyed Libya: The Changchun Yatai striker has definitely put the 2018 World Cup behind him and seemed to take it out on Libya. The 29-year-old single-handedly gave the Eagles six points in the two fixtures, scoring five times within three days.
2. Rohr’s in-game management: The German almost threw the game away, despite a bright start. After the Libyans pulled one back, their confidence increased and they began to pin the Nigerians back. But Rohr only brought in John Ogu after it was 2-2.
3. Libya did well: Over the two games, I think the Mediterranean Knights gave a good account of themselves and were only edged out by a more clinical side. It would be interesting to see if they can topple South Africa in second place with two matches left.
