The Department of Environment, Ikole Local Government Council, Ekiti, has begun sensitising residents in the area on flood prevention.
Addressing some market men and women at Ikole Main Market on Tuesday, Mr Tunde Famuyisan, Head of the Department, urged residents to refrain from acts that could cause flooding.
“It is pertinent for us to be conscious of our environment by making sure that we do not block waterways and drains otherwise the rainwater will have nowhere to flow.
“We should try not to litter our surroundings with waste or refuse but evacuate them to designated points to prevent being washed into waterways, which could cause blockage and flooding“ he said.
Famuyisan further cautioned the traders to desist from erecting structures near stream beds to avoid the risk of being washed away by heavy rain water, saying that people should stop endangering their lives.
The council official also urged the residents to always clear weeds around their surroundings and make waterways free of any obstructions to allow free flow of rainwater.
He warned all market men and women against indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the market, saying that erring trader would be penalised.
Famuyisan assured the traders of prompt evacuation of refuse from designated point to prevent outbreak of diseases. (NAN)
