Governor, Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko
Former governor of Sokoto state, Alhaji Aliyu Wamakko, on Friday said leadership was a public trust that must be handled responsibly.
Wamakko stated this in Sokoto while receiving an award from the state’s council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
According to him, leadership is a responsibility bestowed on people and leaders must strive to live above board and discharge their duties with absolute fear of Allah.
”Those in position of authorities must serve as leaders and not as rulers, and they must carry everybody along.
”To whom much is given much is expected and the people of Sokoto state have done much for me in the last eight years.
”So, I had the moral obligations to serve them diligently, honestly and piously as a leader, not as a ruler,” he added.
Wamakko, who completed his second term as governor of the state on Friday also said that he ensure that funds that accrued to the state during his tenure were judiciously applied.
He expressed happiness that he was able to transform the state to the best of his ability and “within the existing circumstances”.
He remarked that his administration had a cordial relationship with the media in the state and urged journalists to extend the support to his successor.
Earlier, Chairman of NUJ in the state, Mr Labaran Dundaye, said that the award to the former governor was in recognition of his tangible achievements, which had transformed the state in the last eight years.
Dundaye said ”we will continue to cherish our excellent relations and we shall extend same gesture to the new governor, Aminu Tambuwal.”
