Lawmaker representing Patience Jonathan’s constituency emerges as new Rivers Speaker

The Lawmaker representing Okrika Constituency in the Rivers State House of Assembly, Dabotoru Adams has been elected the new Speaker of the Assembly.

Adams, who hails from the same area as Mrs Patience Jonathan, was elected the new Speaker after Ikunyi Awaji-Ibani voluntarily resigned his position immediately after passing the N307b 2016 budget as presented by the state Governor, Nyesom Wike.

The Speaker did not give any reason but said “in life, there is time for everything.

“I was called to serve and I think I have served you well. At this juncture, I want to announce that I am stepping aside for reasons best known to me.”

Meanwhile, analysts have said, the resignation of the Speaker is a political strategy orchestrated by the state governor, Nyesom Wike.

Wike is preparing for a contentious re-run election after the Appeal Court nullified his victory.

The PDP is also expecting the same fate for the State Lawmakers after losing all the National Assembly seats following the petitions of APC candidates.

The new Speaker, Adams is the only lawmaker whose election has been affirmed by the Appeal Court after it struck-out the petition of the APC Candidate from Okrika for lack of diligence proceeding.

Reacting, a PDP stalwart, Anya Collins said “In the circumstance, if the House of assembly elections are nullified and the governor is also removed, the President is expected to appoint an administrator.

“In order to avert the president appointing an administrator, we need a Speaker to act as Governor and that is what Wike has just achieved.”
