Lawmaker blames Rivers government for Port-Harcourt‎ flood

The lawmaker representing Port-Harcourt State Constituency one in the Rivers State House of Assembly, Victoria Nyeche has accused the State Government of failing to prevent flooding in parts of the state capital.

Nyeche expressed regret that the State Government failed to take advantage of warnings that were made by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency about the impending disaster.

The lawmaker made her observation after undertaking an on-the-spot assessment of affected areas within her constituency.

She also called on residents of Port Harcourt Local Government not to erect buildings on waterways and to avoid dumping refuse in drainage channels.

“It is so unfortunate that our people will be made to suffer in this hardship.

“We have said times without number that we need to watch what we do to our environment.

“Early this year, NiMET warned about the impending flood and now it has come upon us.

“The government has to take more proactive measures if we must stop flooding in our state. And the government must take responsibility for this one that has happened.

“Relief materials must be provided for those who have lost one thing or the other due to this flodding,” she said.

Meanwhile, residents of Nkpogu told newsmen that ongoing sand-filling project in the area had blocked water drainage channels, thereby exposing their homes to flooding.
