Lawan group requests Saraki to resign as Senate President


Following Friday’s Supreme court ruling that the Senate President, Bukola Saraki must face trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal,CCT, some anti-Saraki senators, under the umbrella of the Senate Unity Forum, SUF, have called for his resignation as the leader of the Upper Legislative Chamber.

The group known to be loyal to Senator Ahmed Lawan while affirming that a person answering criminal charges could not lead the Senate, called for his resignation from the Office of the Senate President so that he could concentrate on his trial at the CCT.

Saraki’s appeal, challenging the propriety of his trial on charges of false assets declaration levelled against him at the CCT.

Delivering the ruling, JUstice Walter Onnoghen-jed six man panel of judges presided over by the Chief Justice of the Federation, Justice Mahmud Mohammed, dismissed Saraki’s appeal against the jurisdiction of the CCT.

Justice Onnoghen, affirmed that the charges instituted against him were valid and that the tribunal was validly constituted with requisite jurisdiction to try him.
