A pregnant woman has reportedly died at the University Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) over suspected case of lassa fever.

She died on Monday at the Hospital.

The Cross River State government, DAILY POST gathered provided several measures, but the victim eventually gave up the ghost.

The Commissioner for Health in Cross River State Dr. Inyang Asibong told DAILY POST on phone on Monday that the suspected was taken to Navy Clinic.

She said the late pregnant woman was brought from the neighbouring Taraba State first to Navy Hospital, Calabar before moving her to the intensive care of the UCTH when her situation became critical.

She explained that blood sample of the deceased has been taken for proper diagnosis, assuring that measures have been put in place to avoid spread.

“She had signs and symptoms of Lassa, the case was transferred to UCTH for effective management. We have sent samples to Irua for further investigations and confirmation. We lost the victim”, the Commissioner said.

“The woman came from Taraba State and was first admitted at Nigerian Navy Hospital along Moore Road Calabar, before being transferred to the intensive Care of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital UCTH”, he added.

Reacting on the suspected case of Lassa fever, the Chief Medical Director of UCTH, Professor Thomas Agan, said the woman died a few minutes after she was brought in from Navy Hospital.

“We have taken her blood sample to laboratory for proper study. After that we shall release the result. We had taken delivery of some Lassa fever items by federal government.

“For now we are working on our infectious disease centre and very soon it shall be opened to members of the public. By then we shall be in a better position to handle serious infectious disease cases”, he stated.
