Lassa fever: Teaching hospital discharges 9 patients in Bauchi

The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi, has discharged nine patients out of the 10 patients admitted for Lassa fever treatment.

Dr Adamu Gamawa, Chairman, Bauchi state Primary Health Care Development Agency (BASPHCDA), confirmed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Bauchi.

Gamawa explained that the patients were discharged after they were satisfied healthy by physicians and could join their families.

He said that the remaining patient was responding to treatment and would be discharged on March 26.

Gamawa disclosed that a rapid response team set up by the agency was conducting a follow up on 200 persons suspected to have had direct contact with the patients.

He commended the federal and state governments as well as the federal Ministry of Health and Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Abuja, for supporting the agency during the outbreak of the disease.

Gamawa also commended health workers in the state for their dedication and efficiency during the period of the scourge that had led to 100 per cent success recorded in curbing the menace.

He called on members of the public to intensify efforts in maintaining personal hygiene and environment health to further prevent the disease from further circulation.

The chairman also called on members of the public to report suspected cases to the nearest health facilities for prompt action.

However, he warned relations of suspected patients to desist from treating patients in patent medicines shops. NAN
