Lassa fever: Anambra warns against eating exposed food

Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joe Akabuike has warned residents of the state against eating exposed food items.

The commissioner challenged them to take their hygiene seriously and also ensure that their environment was rid of rodents.

Akabuike who as on a radio programme on the state owned radio station cautioned against the consumptions of raw garri by way of soaking with cold water.

He also said the purchase of the produce from certain parts of the country where it was exposed to all forms of contamination was also dangerous

“Those garri you see spread along the highway while you’re traveling is very risky to consume especially when you drink it. It is better and surer consuming the ones you prepared yourself,” he said.

The Commissioner debunked recent allegations of the invasion of the state by the dreaded fever, assuring that there was no need to panic.

He emphasized that like any other form of disease, good hygiene practices and taking precautions over all form of symptoms among family members and friends will go a long way to curb the spread of the diseases.

“Hand washing remains an effective way of preventing diseases. Families as well as corporate organizations should re-adopt the use of tip taps and hand sanitizers placed in public places,” he noted.

Akabuike further listed the creation of Primary Health Care Agency, the Health Insurance Scheme and revitalization of secondary care institutions as some of the reforms being carried out in the State.

“These reforms are being carried out to stand the test of time and is playing a great role in putting the health sector in the state as one of the best across the country,” he added.
