LASG rids Apapa-Oshodi Expressway of abandoned tankers

The Lagos State Government has removed all illegal tankers parked or abandoned along the Apapa–Oshodi Expressway.

This was disclosed through a statement by the spokesperson of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LSTMA, Mrs. Bola Ajao, on Monday.

She said that Government’s decision to clear the abandoned tankers from the area would minimize gridlock, adding that it will ensure the safety of Lagosians plying the road.

According to the General Manager, LASTMA, Babatunde Edu, who headed a combined team from the agency, the Nigerian Navy and the police on Sunday, stressed that the team removed over 50 tankers from the area.

Edu further stated that the exercise was carried out so as to restore sanity to the area and checkmate the shortcomings resulting from abandoned tankers.

He affirmed, “The state government, being a responsible and responsive one, will ensure that every citizen has a right to Apapa, and not only the tankers or trucks carrying containers.”

The LASTMA boss said the tanker drivers had in the past truncated efforts to restore sanity to Apapa, adding that the government will not relent in its enforcement until tanker drivers obey laid down rules.

He said, “Series of meetings have been held with the Petroleum Tanker Drivers branch of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers to educate their members and ensure that tanker drivers desist from indiscriminate parking and indiscipline attitude on the road.

“All tanker drivers are advised to adhere strictly to the new directive, as the government will not hesitate to enforce traffic rules and regulations to the latter.”

He called on members of the public to inform LASTMA of abandoned tankers and trucks along the Apapa – Oshodi Expressway, stressing that the agency has been quipped to respond to such calls.
