Barcelona defender, Gerard Pique, has revealed that Andres Iniesta planned to announce his exit from the club after their Champions League quarter-final against Roma.
Iniesta, 34, decided to delay the announcement when Barca were unexpectedly eliminated in Rome, losing 3-0 and exiting the competition on away goals.
The Spain midfielder finally said he was leaving in a news conference on April 27.
“I found out he was going the day before the second leg against Roma.
“He told me, ‘As long as there’s no disaster against Roma tomorrow, I will make my decision public.’ We all know what happened after that,” Pique said at Iniesta’s send-off on Friday.
Pique was among those invited to attend a special event organized by the club, to thank Iniesta after 22 years of service, more than 600 appearances and 32 trophies.
