However, Ernesto Valverde team equalized in the second half through Luis Suarez, before Ousmane Dembele slammed in the winner from a loose ball.
Real Madrid had the chance to keep up with their rivals in the late kick-off, but could only draw 1-1 at Athletic Bilbao.
Iker Muniain’s goal was cancelled out by Isco in the second half, as both sides shared points at San Mames.
Barca have 12 points, having won all their games so far. Real are second with 10 points.
