Lagos guber: CAN adopts Pitan as Ambode, others boycott debate

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Lagos State chapter, has adopted Dr Leke Pitan as its candidate for the 2015 governorship election in the state.

The former Lagos Commissioner for Health was adopted after a debate organised for all the Christian aspirants in the state.

Curiously, only Pitan, who is seeking to become the standard bearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC) honoured the association’s invitation.

The event, which was held at Dr Akinola Maja Memorial Gospel Baptist Church, Lagos, on Saturday, was attended by a large crowd, with all the five blocks that made up CAN fully represented.

Vice Chairman, CAN, Lagos State, Very Rev. S. T. V. Adegbite, in his opening remarks, told the gathering that “it is unfortunate that only Dr Pitan showed up at the debate.”

According to him, “all the aspirants were invited properly by writing and were also informed by phone calls”.

“The Christian community had over slept all this while and has, therefore, not taken a deeper interest in the political process in the state, but has now decided to take more than a cursory look in the profile and Christianic credentials of whosoever will govern the state from now”.

Pitan was asked to address the gathering and state his agenda for the state, since there was no one to debate with.

It is unclear why Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, a Christian and frontline aspirant also under the APC platform stayed away from the debate.
