Lagos State government yesterday said it has lined up series of sensitization meetings for school managements on measures to curtail the spread of Ebola virus among pupils in the state ahead of the September 22 resumption date for schools across the country.
The Commissioner for Education in the state, Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye, while speaking at a meeting with Tutors-General and Permanent Secretaries of all the six education districts in the state, said the principals of public schools from the six education districts as well as Education Secretaries and Head Teachers of public schools in the state would be sensitized on Wednesday, September 17 (today), while proprietors of private schools will get their sensitization on Thursday, September 18.
Her words, “The government will instruct them to identify an Ebola Virus Disease Focal Officer in each of the schools who will be responsible for surveillance and health monitoring as well as the provision of adequate environmental sanitation, including clean toilets and premises in their school.
“The sensitization will also dwell on the provision of running water, soap and the encouragement of frequent hand washing among pupils and the arrangement of prompt referral of a sick person to the nearest health institution for treatment,” she said.
The Commissioner added that at the end of each sensitization, environmental and personal hygiene measures such as the training and sensitization of pupils, vendors, teachers and non-academic staff on the virus and how to avoid it would be emphasized.
