The Lagos government has commenced the distribution of farm produce to farmers across the state to help boost food production.
The distribution of the farm produce was set up as part of the state government’s empowerment programme which cut across fishing, piggery, sheep rearing, egg marketing, poultry, and horticulture among others.
This was disclosed by the governor at the presentation of the produce to beneficiaries at the Fish Farm Estate, Odogunyan, Ikorodu. He was represented by the state commissioner for agriculture, Gbolahan Lawal.
Fashola further disclosed that the initiative, tagged “Agricultural Value Chains Empowerment” will benefit about 3000 residents of the state.
He said, “Last week, during the World Food Day, the Lagos State Government announced the empowerment of 3,149 residents, comprising youths, traders, and existing farmers with farm inputs and produce under the Agricultural Value Chains Empowerment Programme to boost food production.
“Since the commencement of the empowerment programme, distributions of inputs have been made in the various divisions in Lagos, with 747 beneficiaries receiving their inputs in the areas of fishing, piggery, sheep and goat, egg marketing, feed mill, poultry feed, fish feed, cassava, aquaculture, rice, pepper soup, fish marketing, coconut, vegetable, horticulture and butchery.”
He added that centres had been provided in Badagry, Odogunyan, Epe and Agege areas of the state for easy access to the items.
“The government will also follow up on the progress of the inputs and produce received to assess the impact on the beneficiaries,” he said.
