Two doctors, Taiwo Shogunle, and Adeleke Olusegun, were Tuesday arraigned before a Lagos Magistrates’ Court for allegedly causing the death of their patient, Omojola Bamgboye, during a surgical operation.
The doctors, of St. Raphael Divine Mercy Specialist Hospital at Ijede, Ikorodu area of the state allegedly forgot a towel inside their patient after a surgical operation, PMNews is reporting.
According to the police prosecutor, Supol Eshiet Eshiet, the accused persons committed the offence between 18 and 19 of December, 2015 at St. Raphael Divine Mercy Specialist Hospital, Ijede, Ikorodu, Lagos.
The prosecutor told the court in charge No L/28/2016 that, “Shogunle, 53 and Olusegun, 43 were arrested by operatives of the Zone 2 Command, Onikan, Lagos.
After investigation by one Inspector Monday Omoigui and his team, the doctors were arraigned on a one count charge of felony, to wit, murder.
“The doctors unlawfully killed the man during surgical operation by negligently abandoning a foreign body, towel, in his abdomen,” the prosecutor said, adding that the offence is punishable under section 222(2) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The accused persons pleaded not guilty.
The chief Magistrate, A.T. Omoyele admitted them to bail in the sum of N500, 000 each with two sureties each in like sum.
Omoyele adjourned the case till 9 September, 2016 for mention, directing the prosecutor to duplicate the case file and forward it to the office of the Directorate of Public Prosecution, DPP, for advice.
