The Lagos State Commissioner of Police (CP), Mr Fatai Owoseni has vowed to stop at nothing to apprehend and bring to book the perpetrators of the banks robbery at FESTAC Town, Lagos on Tuesday.
DAILY POST recalls that Access and Diamond banks located on 4th Avenue at the Festac area of Lagos were yesterday invaded by 40 heavily armed bandits, who carted away millions of naira. Stray bullets from their guns reportedly hit a woman and her child who later died.
After the incident he CP gave his assurance.
In a statement issued to newsmen in Lagos on Wednesday, the commissioner, through the command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Joseph Offor, said in a statement that residents of the state should go about their normal business.
“The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State wishes to reassure the residents of Lagos of their safety and urged them to go about their normal business. Also he has vowed to stop at nothing in unraveling the perpetrators of this heinous crime.”
According to the statement, the gun battle between the police and the armed robbers forced the robbers to abandon the operation and fled.
“On Oct. 13 at about 8.25 a.m., the Area ‘E’ and the Divisional Police Headquarters both at FESTAC Town received information of sporadic shootings at 4th Avenue, FESTAC Town, Lagos.
“In a swift reaction, the Area Commander, Area ‘E’ mobilized a joint Team of Area ‘E’ and Divisional Headquarters, FESTAC that engaged the armed robbers.
“Numbering over 40, dressed in military camouflage and armed with military assault rifles of various calibres, they were robbing Access and Diamond Banks simultaneously.
“The gun battle forced the armed robbers to abandon over N27 million and 240 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, the case had reportedly been referred to Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) for investigation, while security had also been beefed up within FESTAC Town and its environs.
