Dr. Wisdom Sawyer, a serving permanent secretary in Bayelsa State Civil Service and owner of the Survival Hospital located at Igbogene community of Yenagoa local government of the state on Wednesday, refuted allegations by the State Police Command, claiming he was arrested in an attempt to buy a new born baby for the sum of N200,000.

According to reports, Sawyer was at the weekend arrested by an ‘Operation Strike Team’ of the command over alleged attempts to make the illegal purchase, but he was, however, arrested after Nwachukwu Nnenna, the 24-year-old mother of the baby reportedly filled a complaint.

But in a statement on Wednesday in Yenagoa at the Command headquarters, Sawyer, debunking the claim, said Nnenna who is a commercial sex worker had approached him in November 2015 to abort an eight-month-old pregnancy which he declined, Leadership reports.

He further noted that he advised her to bear the child and put it up for adoption rather than go through with an abortion.

While displaying documents showing that both agreed to give up the child for adoption, the doctor said though the mother of the new born baby was a patient in his hospital and was delivered of a baby, the allegation that the baby was offered for sale was untrue.

‘‘The document was undertaken by the patient Nwachukwu Nnnena to transfer the baby to government since she cannot care for the baby and not a document for sale of her baby as alleged,” Sawyer said, adding that he was surprised when he was visited by the police and rights activists, FIDA, alleging his involvement in such an act.
