Lacazette’s signing will influence Alexis Sanchez to stay at Arsenal – Winterburn

Former Arsenal defender, Nigel Winterburn has said that Alexandre Lacazette’s impending move will influence Alexis Sanchez’s decision to sign a new contract.

Lacazette has already completed his medicals with the Gunners, ahead of a £44million move to the Emirates.

The France striker has agreed personal terms and is poised to put pen to paper on a five-year deal.

Sanchez is, however, yet to sign a contract extension at Arsenal, with his current deal running out in 2018.

Winterburn believes Lacazette’s impending arrival could influence his decision.

“I think it was obvious to Arsenal fans and to Arsene Wenger that one of those areas to strengthen is the centre forward position.

“I am hoping Giroud will stay, I still feel he is valuable to the team as well. Arsenal know they need quality to help them challenge for the title.

“I hope the Lacazette deal leaves [Sanchez] at the club. He can play on the left, up front or in the hole. Arsenal cannot afford to bring in Lacazette then two weeks later Sanchez leaves.

“I am hoping Wenger can persuade him to stay for another season, see what happens with the team then sign a new contract,” Winterburn told Sky Sports‎.
