Labour leaders disagree with NBS unemployment statistics

The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC, has disagreed with the National Bureau of Statistics position that the number of unemployed Nigerians dropped from 16.07 million in 2011 to 4.67 million at the end of the fourth quarter of 2014.

President of the congress, Mr. Bobboi Kaigama, who spoke yesterday said, “my reaction is simple: I don’t believe the statistics of the NBS. Let them tell us where and in which organisations the jobs were created.”

Similarly, General secretary of Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN, Comrade Bayo Olowoshile, also disagreed with the NBS, stating that, “The statistics was not done with sincerity of purpose and Nigerian government should not rely on it.”

Not too long ago, it was reported that the NBS has revised the country’s labour statistics, stating that , the number of those unemployed had dropped from 16.07 million or 23.9 per cent in 2011 to 4.67 million or 6.4 per cent as at the end of the fourth quarter of 2014.
